Lynn’s gifts as a poet and teacher make her a very skilled manuscript assessor. She is deeply attuned to the music of poetry and with her finely-honed poet’s ear she was able to give my work a close and perceptive assessment in terms of the machinery of the poems – the language, line-breaks, form, repetition and rhythm of the pieces on the page. This was enormously helpful in the preparation of my collection for publication,  but perhaps even more staggering to me was Lynn’s ability to read to the heart of the poems and articulate the resonances that go beyond conscious craft. Lynn’s detailed report included many references to threads and echoes between the poems – her insights were always illuminating, sensitive and true.

When attempting to give birth to a collection of poetry, there must be a midwife. Someone must be there to hold the body, to caress the body, to witness the effort, to guide and massage and catch. Lynn’s presence and generosity – her careful reading, her thoughtful, brave, honest responses to my work… these made my book possible. There is very little I feel more grateful for than this. Her wisdom and insight were invaluable, and I can say with assurance that the book would not be what it is, would not be as true as it is and would not be in the form that it is in, if it were not for her help. But especially what I noticed when working with Lynn was that she did not tell, she asked. And then she listened. And that was exactly what was needed.
